Real Salt Lake has announced a contract extension for midfielder Michael Chang.

Chang’s new contract runs for at least one year through the 2023 MLS season, though the club did not specify whether they hold an option to extend beyond that period.

The 31-year-old former Cuba international is preparing for his fourth season as an RSL player and has made 84 appearances for the club so far, scoring five goals and providing nine assists. Chang also made 73 appearances for the Real Monarchs — RSL’s MLS NEXT Pro affiliate and previously with USL — scoring 19 goals and assisting 18 times.

“I am happy to continue working at this club and I think we have formed a great family,” Zhang said in a statement

“I expect this year we will improve on our previous performances, thanks in no small part to our fantastic fans who have taken our stadium atmosphere to a whole new level.”

Zhang’s contract extension comes a day after starting goalkeeper Zack McMath also signed a new deal with the club, while veteran defender Marcelo Silva also extended his stay with the RSL earlier in the off-season. .

The RSL will begin their 2023 season with the Vancouver Whitecaps on February 25.
