An artificial Christmas tree provides holiday joy without the hassle of having to provide water and vacuum up pine needles every day.

Another positive of artificial trees—they can be used year after year and even beyond the holiday season. “You can use the tree for multiple seasons, not just Christmas,” says Michelle Essix, owner and executive designer at home decor company SwayM.E. Vegas. “I had one for Halloween, Easter, and Valentine’s.”

We purchased 24 fake Christmas trees and tested them in The Lab for a full day, evaluating ease of setup and storage, appearance, sturdiness, and lighting quality. Our best overall pick, the Puleo International 7.5 Pre-Lit Teton Pine Artificial Christmas Tree has a realistic appearance, pre-strung lights, and can be assembled with just one person.

Best Overall

Puleo International 7.5 Pre-Lit Teton Pine Artificial Christmas Tree

  • Varied needles give a full look
  • Easy to assemble and take down
  • Don’t need gloves to assemble
  • Can assemble with one person

  • Lights don’t extend to the end of the branches
  • No variations of lights

After a full day of testing, the Puleo International Teton Pine Artificial Christmas Tree was a clear winner. With its classic appeal, this 7.5-foot pre-lit tree received high scores from our testers across all categories—including the incredibly important appearance category.

The branches on this option vary in size and shape, giving it a very full appearance that rivals a natural tree. And unlike other artificial trees, the “needles” also felt soft while assembling—no gloves required. Our tester noted that you only need one person and assembly took about 17 minutes, which we love. The base and tree stand were both simple to assemble and felt sturdy enough to handle heavier ornaments and garlands. Disassembling and storing the tree was even easier, only taking about five minutes with no visible damage or bulging on the included box.

One downside of this tree is that the lighting does not reach the very bottom of the branches; in addition, all of the lights are white without the choice of variation. That being said, it’s easy to wrap around another string of your favorite colored lights for a different look each holiday season. Plus, it should be easy to locate and fix specific broken bulbs: “When one light is out only a small section is impacted so it would be easy to troubleshoot the missing bulb,” said our tester.

Note: Due to high demand, this tree is currently out of stock. Until then, we recommend checking out the Puleo International 7.5 Foot Pre-Lit Elegant Series Fraser Fir Artificial Christmas Tree. While we didn’t test it, it’s the same brand we loved in a similar style, size, and price point.

Best Unlit

National Tree Company Artificial Slim Christmas Tree

  • Budget-friendly
  • Sturdy branches or ornaments
  • Quick assembly and disassembly

  • Not the most realistic

If you’re looking for a more minimal tree that you can make your own, the National Tree Company Artificial Slim Christmas Tree is a great option. This simple tree is free of any lighting or decor, so you can decorate it with your own style—and even change it up year after year.
Assembly for this tree was quick (less than seven minutes) and only required one person. The sections were far lighter in weight than other options, and the branches were easy to pull apart for intuitive and quick fluffing. Disassembly was even easier, with no instructions needed. The tree compresses easily and fits well into its storage box.

This tree’s slim appearance is ideal for tight corners and small spaces, but lends it a slightly less realistic appearance. The tree still feels sturdy enough to handle ornaments and tree toppers, so it’s perfect for those looking to get fancy with decorations.

Best Realistic

Balsam Hill Vermont White Spruce

  • Offered in six sizes
  • True Needle branch tip technology
  • Five light options
  • Extremely realistic and beautiful

  • Very heavy and bulky
  • Need many people to assemble and disassemble

One of the best parts about artificial Christmas trees is that you can find options that look and feel just like the real thing. Take Balsam Hill’s Vermont White Spruce, which earned a perfect score for its realistic appearance.

Regarding both assembly and disassembly, we found it helpful to have another person on hand as the pieces are somewhat heavy. Our testers found that one person should align the sections (there are helpful arrows on the sections) and the other should insert the pieces. Still, we found the instructions to be thorough and helpful, but the heaviness of the tree makes it difficult to assemble and disassemble without help.

The size and weight of this pick definitely make it more difficult to assemble, but it also contributes to the tree’s lush, realistic appearance. Balsam Hill models its artificial trees after nature, with True Needle technology for optimal realism and fullness. We tested the 7.5-foot option, but it comes in five other sizes to fit any room or space. Plus, there’s an option to add Twinkly smart lights for an added price, so you can create beautiful light shows in your living room with just your smartphone.

Editor’s Note: Due to high demand, this tree is currently out of stock. Until then, we recommend checking out the Evergreen Pre-Lit Vermont Spruce Artificial Christmas Tree

Best Flocked

Vickerman 7.5-ft. Flocked Alaskan Pine Artificial Christmas Tree

  • Pre-lit
  • Decorated with faux snow
  • Stable branches for ornaments
  • Two different light styles

  • Heavy

With Vickerman’s Flocked Alaskan Pine Artificial Christmas Tree, you get realistic flocking that’ll make your home a winter wonderland. Assembly and disassembly both received high scores, as we found it easy to lift each piece out of the box and put it back in the box for storage. We love that there are no complicated wires to connect, so it took less than 15 minutes to complete. Just note that disassembling can be a bit difficult, mostly due to the tree’s heavy weight.

Once set up, we loved the frosted look that brings a bit of snow into your home, even if you live in a warmer climate. Another plus of this pick is the different light shapes and sizes included. The 800 bright clear lights are broken up by 45 larger bulbs that look make this tree look gorgeous without any ornaments. If you want to add some extra decoration, you’ll be pleased to know that our tester found the branches extremely sturdy. “It would support heavy ornaments with ease. As I was placing the ornaments, the tree did not sway much or shake,” they shared.

Best Slim

National Tree Company Pre-Lit Slim Virginia Pine Artificial Christmas Tree

  • Narrow shape
  • Varied, realistic branches
  • Easy to store

  • Thin tree doesn’t look full compared to other options

If you’re decorating a smaller space or want a tree with a slimmer profile, consider National Tree Company Pre-Lit Slim Virginia Pine, which earned high scores for its ease of assembly, disassembly, and appearance.

Constructed with sturdy, high quality materials, this artificial Christmas tree. The tree is pre-lit with 260 clear lights and the varied needles. The branches fluffed easily to hide any bare spots for a full effect.

The lightweight tree came apart and stored extremely easily, which adds to this pick’s value. It comes at a competitive price, to begin with, and the easy storage ensures you can reuse this option year after year.

Best Tall

Best Choice Products 7.5-ft Premium Spruce Artificial Christmas Tree

  • Budget-friendly
  • Quick to disassemble
  • Taller and shorter options

  • Takes a lot of fluffing to perfect

If you’re looking to decorate a big room with high ceilings, consider a tree with a tall option like this spruce option from Best Choice Products. Our lab tested the 7.5-foot version, which is a pretty standard height for artificial trees, but it also comes in a 6-foot and 9-foot option for those looking for something a bit taller.

Set-up took less than 13 minutes thanks to the helpful instructions. It definitely takes a long time to perfect this tree by pushing down and fluffing all of the branches for a full appearance. If you don’t have a full hour to spare, expect a bit of the trunk to show, but with lights and decor, you won’t even notice. This tree comes unlit, so you have free range to decorate this pick any way you wish.

Disassembly took less than five minutes, so storing this tree to prepare for next year is a breeze. While it’s not extremely realistic looking, it comes at a budget-friendly price and the stable tree ensures you can use it again and again.

Best Budget

Treetopia Artificial Pencil Christmas Tree

  • Budget-friendly
  • Slim profile
  • Easy to assemble and disassemble
  • Different light settings with foot pedal

  • Smaller than other options

If you think holiday decor has to be expensive, allow us to introduce you to this slim artificial tree from Treetopia. The budget-friendly design is an easy way to bring holiday cheer into your home without breaking the bank.

One of the most noticeable aspects of the tree is how simple it was to assemble and disassemble—we were able to put it together in under 10 minutes and store the tree in its original box in under three minutes, earning it a five out of five on our scale. The 250 lights come pre-strung and include a foot pedal to easily turn them on and off. There are eight different light functions to choose from to create different looks with just one tree.

The lightweight tree, which was a foot shorter than most of the trees we tested, would also be great for entryways and smaller rooms. The pencil shape adds a bit more interest than the classic Christmas tree shape, and this pick feels sturdy enough to support intricate decorations.

Editor’s Note: Due to high demand, this tree is currently out of stock. Until then, we recommend checking out the National Tree Company Artificial Slim Christmas Tree, another budget-friendly pick that’s slim enough for small spaces.

What to Look for in an Artificial Christmas Tree

On average, Christmas trees are about 7.5-feet tall. Though many will have a traditional, full look, there are also slim options out there if you’re working with limited floor space. “The standard width is about 48 inches to 54”,” says lifelike trees buyer at English Gardens Dean Darin.

Ease of assembly

Christmas trees typically come in three sections that lock into each other, making them easy to assemble. When choosing a tree, however, check the weight of the tree—if it’s on the heavier side, it may require at least two people and more time to put together.

Lighting can also be a tricky part of the assembly. While some options have to be plugged into an outlet, many require you to connect multiple plugs throughout the tree, a process that may lengthen assembly time.

You also need to factor in the time you’ll spend making the branches look full and minimizing gaps. In our testing, we found this to be time-consuming. However, some trees made the process easier and more comfortable than others. In addition, some trees have stiff branches and needles that can scratch, so we recommend wearing long sleeves and a pair of gardening gloves during setup.

Some trees will offer a simple warm white light with one setting, while others include both white and multicolor lighting with an assortment of settings.

SwayM.E. Vegas’ Michelle Essix’s philosophy is the more lights, the better. “Buying a pre-lit tree that has both colored lights and white lights allows for more versatility in design. Current trees are so advanced that when adding each piece on, it automatically connects the lights so that you are not searching for plugs. It really makes the tree sparkle,” she says.

Extra features

Some trees may have additional features that suit your style. For example, if a tree has lighting, it may also include an on/off foot pedal that makes it easy to control. Other trees may be pre-decorated with ornaments or faux snow for a winter look. All of these upgrades can add to the cost of the tree, so it may not be worth it to you to add.

How We Chose The Best Space Heaters

To determine the best models you can buy right now, we scoured brands and retailers for their bestselling, top-rated options. We then narrowed down the field by analyzing consumer reviews and factoring in our personal experience with the individual space heaters. We also considered factors including type (for example, radiant versus electric), power, value, ease of use and safety features.

What To Consider When Shopping For A Space Heater

“The first step in shopping for a space heater is understanding your options,” says Angi home expert Bailey Carson. Here are the main factors to keep in mind to help you choose the right one for your home.

There are a lot of different types of space heaters, Carson explains: radiant, which is used to warm small spaces; electric, which plugs directly into your wall; convection, which can reach an entire room; baseboard, which are long units that are placed on the floor; and combination, which use a fan to evenly distribute heat while being energy efficient.

Electric space heaters tend to be the most budget-friendly, while radiant and electric heaters are the most portable—but may cost more, Carson says.

Many space heaters now come with safety features to prevent burns and fires. But, in general, Carson says that radiant space heaters are considered the safest. “They stay cool to the touch, so you don’t have to worry about them burning anyone,” she says. “They also usually have an automatic shutoff feature, which can help keep you and your family safe if someone accidentally tips the heater over.”

The best capacity for you really depends on the size of the room you’re planning on heating, Carson says. “Indoor or outdoor, make sure your heater will cover that area,” she says. And, depending on the size of your space, you may want to consider buying more than one and strategically setting them up to maximize heat output.

Additional Features

If your budget allows for it, it’s not a bad idea to look for a space heater that also purifies your air, says Dyson Design Manager David Hill. “Homes built in the last 10 to 15 years are better sealed to comply with energy efficiency requirements,” he says. As a result, “pollutants can be trapped inside and air circulation can be compromised, especially in winter. With that in mind, you should consider investing in a heater that also purifies the air in your home.”

Electric Fireplaces

The 10 best electric fireplaces to cozy up to this winter

Some of the links in this content are affiliate links, and we charge a commission (not to you) for purchases made through this link.

In the last few years, most of us have become familiar with the Danish word hygge, which essentially translates to cozy vibes we get from comfortable spaces and a feelings of togetherness. With colder weather ahead, it isn’t a bad idea to maximize on this concept in any way you can, like treating yourself to a plush robe or investing in a new down comforter or heated blanket. But few things on the cozy spectrum beat warming up and relaxing in front of a fire.

If you don’t have a fireplace, or dread sweeping up ashes and cleaning the hearth, you can opt for a clean-burning electric fireplace to do the job. While there are propane models on the market that require a gas line hookup, all you need to get an electric fireplace up and running is an outlet.

What to Consider

When shopping for an electric fireplace, there are generally three types to consider: wall-mount, recessed or insert, and freestanding. Wall-mount electric fireplaces are installed just like a TV, and inserts require a custom-cut space to sit flush with a wall, which gives you a more streamlined, professional look. Many models offer both installation options, if you want to temporarily wall-mount an electric fireplace until you get around to construction for an insert. However, keep in mind that the majority of low- to mid-priced inserts can’t be hardwired, so you may need to bring in an electrician if there’s no outlet nearby.

Freestanding electric fireplaces are the easiest to get up and running — they’re essentially plug-and-play — and come in a variety of styles, including models designed like old-fashioned wood-burning stoves, mantles with built-in inserts, and consoles with built-in inserts that include storage and double as TV stands.

In terms of a heating element, the majority of electric fireplaces operate with fans, just like space heaters, and can warm spaces up to 400 square feet. Some models use infrared technology, which typically (but not always) give more coverage.

As for features, almost all electric fireplaces have adjustable thermostats and can be used with or without heat, different brightness settings, and come with a remote control, and some have programmable timers. Most wall-mount and insert electric fireplaces feature a range of color choices for flames and embers, and some include crackling sounds. There are also smart models equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth that are controlled via app.

How We Selected

Every electric fireplace we cover has an average customer rating of at least 4 stars, and the majority of the models featured rank 4.5 stars and up. During our research, we looked at models from top brands like Duraflame, Touchstone, and Real Flame, and considered things like quality of build, value-added features, and aesthetics to make our final selections. We cover a wide selection of different types and styles as mentioned above, and offer picks across multiple price points, from under $50 to a high-end smart electric fireplace for about $1,000.

With classic moulding and a well-proportioned insert, it could easily be mistaken for the real deal, and it can heat spaces up to 1,000 square feet.

The mantle is made of manufactured wood and top features include an adjustable thermostat and no-heat setting, different flame color and brightness options, and an included remote control. We love it in white, but if you’re going for something darker, it also comes in matte black or a mahogany finish.

Budget Buy

FDW Electric Fireplace Stove

  • Great value for the price
  • Compact but heats spaces up to 500 square feet
  • Attractive design with tempered glass door
  • Adjustable thermostat and two fan speeds

It’s tough to beat this price point on this electric fireplace—and it doesn’t skimp on heat output either, with enough power to warm spaces up to 500 square feet. It’s also a customer favorite, with an average of 4.6 stars from more than 1,000 reviewers.

At only 20 inches wide and 10 inches deep, the compact heater can be tucked into the corner of a bedroom or office. Highlights include a tempered glass door with an eye-catching design, curved legs, and a handle that stays cool to the touch. The control panel on the back includes two fan speeds and a knob to adjust the thermostat.

Best Contemporary Freestanding

Turbro Firelake Electric Fireplace

  • Compact and contemporary
  • Heats spaces up to 400 square feet
  • Adjustable thermostat and no-heat option
  • Seven flame colors

  • Visible control panel and heat vent

Most small freestanding electric fireplaces have a vintage-inspired, rustic look. This option is ideal for those who want the same easy setup and convenience, but with contemporary lines.

Like the majority of models we cover, this one heats spaces up to 400 square feet, and you can adjust the temperature. There’s also a 6-hour timer and remote control, plus it features seven splashy flame colors, and can be used with or without heat.

The electric fireplace comes in the black walnut finish that’s shown in addition to a gray wash finish. For the price, we just wish the front heating vent and control panel were better hidden.

Best Small Insert

Tangkula Electric Fireplace Insert

  • Extra-compact, but heats rooms up to 400 square feet
  • Adjustable thermostat and brightness
  • Comes with a remote control

  • Front panel design is so-so

Living in a small space doesn’t preclude you from the cozy vibes an electric fireplace creates. This 18-inch-wide insert puts out an an impressive 5,000 BTUs of heat, capable of warming rooms up to 400 square feet.

It features an adjustable thermostat with a no-heat option, along with a built-in timer, plus there are three brightness levels and it comes with a remote control. The heat vent doesn’t look as seamless as some other inserts we cover and the front control panel is clearly visible. Still, with a reasonable price tag and other features that match the competition, it’s well worth considering.

Best Rustic

Furniture Hotspot Gallatin Faux Stone Electric Fi

If you really want an electric fireplace to be your space’s centerpiece, look no further than this handsome option. There are two bookcases flanking the insert, and the unit features faux-stone details, attractive moulding, and a black-satin finish. It looks great as-is and some customers use it as a TV stand.

Other highlights include five flame and log settings, an adjustable thermostat, and a remote control. With more than 5,000 BTUs, it does a solid job heating spaces up to 400 square feet, and the console gets high marks, with an average 4.7 stars from close to 500 customers.

Best Smart

Touchstone Sideline Elite Smart Electric Fireplace

  • Smart functionality
  • Hardwire or plug in
  • 60 flame and base color combos
  • Five flame speeds and intensity settings

  • Pricey

Sure, you can control this smart electric fireplace with help from Alexa and try out 60 flame and base color combos through the app. But perhaps one of the best reasons to spring for this pricey pick is that you have the option of hardwiring the unit — something that’s less common in lower-priced models.

The Touchstone Sideline Elite also features different flame speeds and intensity settings, a memory function, plus crystals and faux driftwood are thrown in as a bonus extras. It’s available in multiple sizes, too, ranging from 40 to 100 inches wide. Considering all the bells and whistles, the electric fireplace leans to showpiece rather than warmth. Still, for the price, it could cover more square footage.

Best Electric Log

Duraflame Electric Log Set Heater

  • Lovely design with attention to detail
  • Faux birch wood and a rich amber glow
  • Adjustable thermostat and no-heat option
  • Remote control included

This electric log from Duraflame is reasonably priced and has a more realistic and pleasing design than other models of its kind. It features faux birch wood that casts a warm amber glow and creates the illusion of flames flickering against the back of the fireplace. The grate is another well-executed detail, with a powder-coated black matte finish.

The log is roughly 20 inches wide and puts out 4,600 BTUs of heat to warm spaces up to 400 square feet. Other highlights include an adjustable thermostat, no-heat setting, and a side control panel, plus it comes with a remote control.

Air Purifier

The 8 best air purifier of 2022

Some of the links in this content are affiliate links, and we charge a commission (not to you) for purchases made through this link.

Air purifiers are fundamentally simple machines—little more than a fan and a filter—but a great one can improve your life by reducing airborne allergens such as pollen and mold spores and capturing bacteria, viruses, and smoke from wildfires and other sources. To qualify as great, however, an air purifier doesn’t just need to work well; it also needs to be robustly engineered and thoughtfully designed. To us, that means the air purifier should be powerful enough to clean the air in a large living room or playroom, quiet and dark enough for you to sleep near the machine in a bedroom, and inexpensive enough that it’s reasonable to have several units spread throughout your home. After nine years, during which we’ve tested more than 50 different air purifiers, we believe that the exceptional Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty is the best among them. That said, as strong as the Mighty is, its performance is not as singular as it once was, and in recent years many other air purifiers have closely approached our high standards. If you prefer the looks, cost, or other features of our also-great picks, know that they match this Coway model in purifying performance.

Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty

Effective, efficient, and inexpensive

Perfect for bedrooms, playrooms, and living rooms, the AP-1512HH is one of the best performing, most durable, and most economical purifiers we’ve tested.Within 30 minutes, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty reduced heavy smoke pollution in a 135-square-foot, 1,215-cubic-foot New York office by as much as 99.6%. In past tests, it performed equally well in a 200-square-foot, 1,600-cubic-foot New York bedroom. And when we tested it during ongoing smoke conditions in a vast Los Angeles conference room of nearly 10,000 cubic feet—more than twice as large as the AP-1512HH’s specs would seemingly allow—it cut particulate pollution by almost 70% in an hour. It’s a great value at an up-front price often lower than $200, and its energy efficiency and only-once-a-year filter replacement keep its running costs lower than those of many competitors. The AP-1512HH’s compact form, quiet operation, and ability to shut off its display lights make it especially well suited to bedrooms. During our long-term use, we’ve repeatedly confirmed that it performs like new even with filters used continuously for a year or longer.

Coway Airmega 200M

Different look, same great performance

The 200M and the AP-1512HH are virtually identical in performance, but the 200M has an appearance that you may prefer, and it’s a great alternative if you find it at a lower price. The Coway Airmega 200M is made by the same company as the Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty and is virtually identical to it in every important respect, namely the controls, noise, and performance. Their filters and even their faceplates are interchangeable. And like the AP-1512HH, the 200M lets you completely shut off its display lights, something we value highly for bedroom use. The 200M has a square grille rather than a round one, but that’s the only major physical difference. If you prefer the 200M’s looks or if you find it at a better price, we recommend it just as highly.

Winix 5500-2

Exceptional performance, brutalist design

The Winix 5500-2 is an exceptional performer, but its stark look, lack of a display shutoff, and slightly higher electrical use are minor shortcomings. The Winix 5500-2 is an exceptional performer on particulates, capturing 99.9% of the smoke in our test room in just 30 minutes on high. That’s actually marginally better (as in, 0.3% better) than the results we got from the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty, but in practice the difference is insignificant: Both machines, when used continuously as they are in most homes, drop particulates to near zero in under an hour and keep them there. We still prefer the AP-1512HH for its lower energy consumption, smaller visual footprint, and manual display-shutoff feature—the Winix’s display shuts off only when it’s on its lowest fan speed, so if you want a dark bedroom, you have to give up a lot of air filtration—but it’s a close race. The similar 5300-2 and C535 (which is exclusive to the Winix store and Walmart) lack a few of the 5500-2’s features but perform just as well and may be available at lower prices.

Winix AM90

Exceptional performance, modern style

Essentially a 5500-2 in a sleeker housing, the AM90 also shares that model’s few shortcomings, namely higher energy consumption and the absence of a display shutoff. Another Winix air purifier, the Winix AM90, uses the same HEPA filter as the 5500-2 and delivered virtually identical performance in our testing. It has a more contemporary design that many people are likely to find more attractive (if you prefer white, which is the only color option). It adds Wi-Fi capability and a rudimentary app, and it typically costs a bit more than the 5500-2. The almost identical Winix AM80 lacks the AM90’s Wi-Fi capability and comes only in dark gray.

Blueair Blue Pure 311 Auto

Top performance, pleasing form

Delivering exceptional performance in an attractive form, the Blue Pure 311 Auto suffers only from higher running costs and a lack of a display shutoff. The Blueair Blue Pure 311 Auto is similar in capabilities to the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty and the two Winix models, as it reduced smoke levels by 99.9% in 30 minutes on high and by 94.2% on medium. Its auto function, which Blueair introduced to the Blue Pure lineup in late 2020, monitors your room’s air quality and adjusts the fan speed accordingly. And it has other features we like, including notably quiet performance, terrific energy efficiency, and a control panel that automatically dims after you adjust the settings. This model is also particularly attractive, with a tweedlike, washable cover that’s available in several muted colors (it arrives in gray; you can purchase the other colors separately). Two minor knocks against it: The air-quality indicator lamp, a bright blue LED, shuts off only when the unit is on its lowest setting, and Blueair recommends replacing the filters every six months, pushing yearly replacement costs above those of the Coway and Winix machines.

Levoit Core 400S

Great performance plus voice control

As effective as our top pick, the Coway AP-1512HH, but usually a bit more expensive to run, the Levoit Core 400S adds voice control via an app, Amazon Alexa, or Google Assistant. The Levoit Core 400S offered solid performance in our testing, removing 99.1% of smoke particles in 30 minutes on high and 96.3% on its third of four speeds—the highest at which it produces less than 50 decibels of noise. If you want a basic smart air purifier, it’s an attractive option, as it connects with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control, in addition to having its own app. But it’s typically more expensive than our top pick, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty.

Blueair Blue Pure 211+

A stellar performer for larger rooms

The Blue Pure 211+ aced our tests, and its ability to move extremely high volumes of air makes it our pick for large spaces. The Blueair Blue Pure 211+ is our choice among air purifiers for large spaces of up to 650 square feet, especially when the space involves open floor plans or high ceilings. With the ability to filter more air per hour than our top pick, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty, it works faster to achieve and maintain low particulate levels in such challenging rooms. The combined up-front price and running costs of the Blue Pure 211+ are much higher than those of the AP-1512HH (totaling about $1,150 over five years), but that’s comparable to the costs of most other large-space purifiers we’ve looked at. It was an exceptional performer in our testing, and it’s quiet and attractive, to boot. All that said, unless you really need to clean a particularly large space, the quieter, smaller, and more affordable AP-1512HH is usually a better option.

Levoit Core 300

Small, effective, and attractive

In a small bedroom, dorm room, or office, the compact and affordable Levoit Core 300 performs extremely well and looks great. If you need to clean the air in a space of around 200 square feet or less, the Levoit Core 300 (sometimes listed as the Levoit VortexAir) is a solid and inexpensive purifier. It was impressive in our tests, reducing particulates by more than 97% on its high setting in 30 minutes in a 135-square-foot New York office. On medium, it reduced them by more than 92%. It’s attractive and compact, measuring just 14.5 inches tall and 8.5 inches in diameter, and thanks to its display-shutoff feature, it won’t interrupt sleep with bright lights. It’s also the cheapest up front of all our picks. But it’s not terribly energy efficient: Running it 24/7 on medium consumes about $300 of electricity over five years, and seven new filters in that period cost $180, making this model slightly more expensive than the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty over the long term. And it doesn’t keep pace with the AP-1512HH or the Blue Pure 211+ in larger rooms.

Blankets & Throws

6 best heated throw blankets for winter 2022

Some of the links in this content are affiliate links, and we charge a commission (not to you) for purchases made through this link.

Whether the chillier months have you piling on the extra warm sheets — or you just feel cold pretty much all the time — having a heated throw blanket on hand can help you feel comfortable and cozy in no time.

These types of blankets come in all different patterns, textures, and sizes, and they can be used for everything from preheating your bed to keeping your hands and feet toasty all day long. Some can even be worn like a shawl or serve as a pocket of warmth for your ice-cold feet.

Are Electric Blankets Safe?

A word on safety: Electric throw blankets emit extremely low, non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (EMFs) as they heat up. Many standard household appliances also emit EMFs, and they’re generally considered low-risk for the majority of the population to use. However, because of these EMFs, the fragility of the electric wires inside of the blanket, and the prolonged heat exposure that these products provide, certain users may want to proceed with caution.

Those who have circulation issues or nerve damage, as well as those who are pregnant, are recommended to avoid the use of electric throw blankets. It’s a good idea to avoid using a heated blanket with small children and pets around, too. Also make sure that your heated throw blanket is a top layer only: Don’t sit on these blankets or crush them in any way because their internal heating mechanisms may get damaged.

Finally, while some of these blankets are indeed made for layering onto your bed, try to avoid going to sleep with your heated blanket on — preheating your bed with a blanket before climbing in is a much safer idea. Luckily, for total peace of mind, every heated throw blanket in this guide has an auto-off function, and we’ve denoted the maximum run time for each one.

No matter what your specifications are, you can find an electric throw blanket that matches your needs here. Check out our guide to the best-heated throw blankets that’ll give you all the warm and fuzzy feels.

As our tester Zarah Kavarana says in her review, “Though you can feel the wires inside the fabric, they’re fine enough to prevent poke-age or any inflexible feel. In fact, I was pleased to find that the blanket didn’t mold to my body any differently than a regular one.”

We’re naming this as our best overall heated throw blanket because of its comfy feel, exceptional warmth, and machine-washable convenience for a reasonable price.

As one reviewer notes, “The heater in our car went out in the winter, so this was great to have for the kids to share in the back seat.”

How to Choose Sheets on Amazon

With so many options to choose from, shopping for sheets on Amazon can be daunting. Paying attention to key factors, like the materials, styles, customer reviews, and seller reputations, can make the process easier and help you focus on what matters most.

What to Consider When Buying Sheets on Amazon

Most of the following criteria are important to take into account when you purchase any sheet set, but some are specific to the Amazon platform. Understanding these key factors can help you select sheets that balance comfort, style, value, and durability.

Sheets use a wide variety of materials in their constructions, and each can impact the feel, appearance, performance, and durability. Every material has potential benefits and drawbacks, so finding the right option for you requires balancing your priorities and preferences. Since Amazon carries such a huge selection, shoppers should be able to find sheets in virtually any common material.

Weave refers to how the individual threads are interlaced to form the fabric. It can affect how a sheet set feels, looks, and performs. Percale and sateen are two of the most common weaves found on Amazon and at other retailers.

Feel describes the sensation of the fabric against the skin. Sheets may be silky, buttery, fuzzy, velvety, crisp, or rough depending on their materials, weave, and quality. The best feel for you will depend on personal preference, but you can get a clearer idea of what a sheet set may feel like by reading customer reviews.

Purchasing sheets that fit properly can prevent unnecessary bunching and shifting while making it easier to keep the fitted sheet on the mattress. Most shoppers can just purchase a set that corresponds to their mattress size. However, if you have a high-profile model, you should double-check the depth of the fitted sheet to ensure it can accommodate the extra height. Many sheet set listings on Amazon specify how thick of a mattress they can fit.

Sheet sets range in price from under $20 to over $1,000, though most average between $50 to $150. The selection of sheets on Amazon reflects this, and there are options across all price-points.

Thread Count

Thread count is often seen as an indicator of quality, but this isn’t always the case. Some manufacturers inflate the thread count without necessarily improving the quality, so numbers can be deceptive. Additionally, some types of sheets, like microfiber and flannel, are more often judged by their weight in grams per square meter (GSM) rather than thread count. While many Amazon listings note the thread count of the sheets, this should not be the only factor you look at when making your choice.

Design, Color and Pattern

Some sheet sets are limited to just one color option, but others have dozens of hues to better fit your aesthetic. Since Amazon carries so many options, shoppers can select between countless colors and patterns.

If air can circulate well through sheets, they’re considered breathable. Breathable sheets are less likely to trap excess body heat, which makes them a strong option for hot sleepers and those in warm climates. However, breathable sheets can also be comfortable in cold weather when paired with a blanket. Amazon carries a robust selection of breathable sheet sets, many of which note their temperature regulation as a selling point.

Durability is how well sheets hold up over time. Pilling, tearing, snagging, and thinning can limit the usable lifespan of a set. While durability can be hard to judge at a glance, reading customer reviews on Amazon might give you an idea of what to expect.

Ease of Care

Since bedding should be washed regularly, ease of care is an important consideration. Sheet sets on Amazon typically detail their care instructions within the product description so that you know what to expect before buying. While many are machine-washable and dryable, we recommend reviewing the manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure you don’t inadvertently damage your new sheets.

Customer Reviews

Customer feedback may not match your experiences since each person’s perspective is unique. However, it can still provide valuable insight that might make it easier to decide which sheets are best for you. Amazon’s built-in review system makes it easy to compare ratings. Shoppers can see the overall rating, read reviews, and look for search terms within the reviews to assess specific criteria, like breathability and quality.

Seller Reputation

Anyone can sell products on Amazon. Before you purchase sheets through the platform, check to see who is selling it. We recommend buying through Amazon or the manufacturer itself. What Types of Sheets are Available on Amazon?

Amazon has a massive selection of sheets in virtually any material you can think of and some you’ve probably never considered. While this selection spans most price ranges, some types of sheets cost more than others based on their materials and construction.

Made from natural fibers, cotton is one of the most traditional materials used in sheets. It tends to be soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking, but its overall feel and performance will also depend on the type of cotton and the weave of the material.

Eco-conscious shoppers often prefer organic cotton because its farming methods reduce the environmental impact.

Egyptian Cotton

Egyptian cotton is virtually synonymous with luxury because its extra-long staple fibers make sheets especially soft and durable. However, these sheets typically carry a higher price tag. Customers should be careful when purchasing bedding made of this material because some manufacturers use the term loosely with little to no authentic Egyptian cotton. If you’re paying a premium price, check to make sure the material is certified by the Cotton Egypt Association.

Supima cotton is a popular alternative to Egyptian cotton. While it has extra-long staple fibers that make it soft and durable like its luxurious cousin, Supima cotton is grown in the United States and typically costs less.

Flannel sheets may be made of cotton, polyester, wool, or a blend of materials. These sheets are typically warm and cozy, making them well suited for cold winter nights. However, many sets are also breathable enough to limit excessive heat buildup. Brushed flannel typically has a soft, fuzzy feel, while unbrushed is stiffer. Most sheet sets use brushed flannel.

Linen sheets are made of natural flax. While they often start out with a rougher feel and a rumpled look, they tend to get softer and more supple over time. Because they are both breathable and moisture-wicking, linen sheets excel in temperature regulation, making them a strong option for hot sleepers and those in warm climates.

Polyester microfiber is a synthetic material that’s generally silky smooth, quick-drying, and durable. Microfiber sheets often replicate the luxurious feel of high-quality cotton at a fraction of the price, making them a favorite of budget shoppers.

Sateen is a weave that generally follows a pattern with four threads over and one thread under. The resulting fabric is typically soft and smooth with a subtle sheen. Sateen tends to be somewhat wrinkle-resistant, but it usually retains more heat than percale.

The percale weave uses a one-over-one-under thread pattern. Percale sheets usually feel crisp and get softer as they age. This weave is prone to wrinkles, so to maximize the crispness, ironing may be necessary. Percale sheet sets are often recommended for hot sleepers because they are highly breathable.

Silk is a natural material derived from the cocoons of silkworms. Sheets made of silk are soft and smooth to the touch and have a lustrous sheen and liquid-like appearance. The material also tends to be highly durable and gentle on sensitive skin. Since they can feel cool in the summer and warm in the winter, silk sheets are appropriate for year-round use.

Most sheets marketed as “bamboo” are made of either lyocell or rayon/viscose derived from the bamboo plant. Bamboo sheets typically resist wrinkles and drape well while feeling silky smooth against the skin. They also tend to be highly breathable and absorbent to keep sleepers cool and dry.

Taking a bath is an enjoyable and relaxing way to unwind after a long day. In fact, research shows that there are more mental and physical health benefits to taking a bath versus taking a shower.

Baths are a great way to indulge in self-care because they trigger multiple senses—including sight, smell, sound, and touch. What to Look for in a Bathtub Tray

A bath tray is around a lot of water and steam when in use, so it’s important to assess the quality of materials used so it doesn’t mold, rust, or begin to smell over time. Look for stainless steel, acrylic, or vanished bamboo to prevent rust or mold. Dry the tray before storing it to keep it in good condition.

If you only need a place to hold a drink and a book, a smaller bath tray will be perfect for you. If you like to keep around other pampering accessories, a tray with a lot of compartments and a larger surface is a good option. If style is a factor, try to find a tray with a basic and versatile design. Bamboo generally has a natural, spa feel while acrylic and metal work best with a modern bathroom.

If baths are a regular part of your self-care routine, then it’s wise to invest in one that perfectly suits your needs and style. It’s also better to make an investment in a product with high-quality materials so it stays in good shape over time. If you’re unsure how often you’re going to use your tray or what you’ll need to keep on its surface, spend money on one with custom options, like removable compartments.

Chanel N°5

No fragrance listicle would be complete without a mention of the iconic, timeless, and most sought-out Chanel N°5. Launched in 1921 by Gabrielle Chanel and perfumer Ernest Beaux, the scent set the standard for modern perfumery. Embracing clean, floral notes with a smooth sensual touch of vanilla, the quintessential perfume has in history been much-publicised as the remarkable Marilyn’s Monroe’s signature scent. After the actor’s confession in a magazine interview sharing that she wore the fragrance (and nothing else) to bed every night, Chanel N°5 took the world by storm.

Coco Mademoiselle

A striking scent with an oriental base of jasmine, white lily and wood spices, the second best-selling perfume from the house of Chanel surprises you with a hit of energising orange notes. Created by Jacques Polge in 1984, the aesthetic piece was designed to be reminiscent of none other than a young, daring Coco Chanel. A strong assertive aroma with hints of femininity in its personality, the Coco Mademoiselle Eau De Parfum is perfect for those looking to make heads turn by day and taking on bold bright adventures by night.

1932 Les Exclusifs De Chanel

Inspired by Coco Chanel’s first diamond collection of high jewellery, this number from the glittering range of Chanel Perfumes will have you feeling and smelling like money. Seizing a musky, woody aroma with a sparking shot of citrus and aldehyde, this scent is the go-to to experiencing enhanced sexuality with a floral touch all in one bottle.

Coco Noir

A vamped-up version of 1984’s Coco Eau De Parfum, Coco Noir celebrates the paradox of Chanel’s role to highlight a woman by bringing femininity to light. An intimate and intensely brilliant scent dominated by bergamot, the comforting richness of this fragrance will always leave them hanging for more from the minute you walk through the door, Sparking sensuality with may rose and a remarkable note of the geranium rose leaf, your collection of Chanel Perfumes would be incomplete without this magnetic work of art.

Les Eaux De Chanel Paris – Édimbourg

This under-the-radar item conjures the wild and majestic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands where Gabrielle Chanel once found her solace in nature. With an aromatic, almost earthy smoky peat, Les Eaux Des Chanel Paris provokes a powerful sensation with a burst of juniper berry and cypress. Reigning undisputedly, the comparatively modern perfume also makes for an incredible men’s cologne for you to share with your significant other.

The 6 best neck massagers for pain relief and relaxation at home

Some of the links in this content are affiliate links, and we charge a commission (not to you) for purchases made through this link.

These days, nearly everyone deals with pain and stiffness in their neck and shoulders. Some are hunched over a keyboard or phone for most waking hours, others work jobs that require you to lift your arms regularly and most of us suffer from long commutes in the car.

Seeing a chiropractor or massage therapist on a regular basis for manual manipulation can definitely help loosen things up—but neck pain, especially from prolonged sitting, is most effectively addressed in the moment, says Camilla Moore, D.C., chiropractor and holistic musculoskeletal specialist based in Providence, RI. That’s why the best neck massagers and other assorted massage guns allow you to address such tightness on a more regular (and affordable) basis, which is better for your body in the long run, she adds.

However, the anatomy of your neck and shoulders is complex and sensitive, so it’s important to choose a neck massager that offers different intensity levels. In doing so, you can start slow without overworking the muscles of your neck. Here, we’ve rounded up the best neck massagers for different needs.

Best Neck Massager Overall

An Affordable, Powerful Neck Massager For Controllable Pressure And Relief

Mirakel Shiatsu Neck Massager

Weight: 4 lbs | Battery Life: Plug-in | Heat: Yes

The Mirakel Shiatsu Back And Neck Massager is strong enough to work out serious knots, offers heat to help muscles relax further and ergonomically sits on your neck and shoulders with hand stirrups to help you control the pressure—that, plus the price, makes it our top pick for the best neck massager available.

Mirakel’s Shiatsu Massager uses eight powerful, bi-directional nodes to delicately knead tight spots. The click of a button can have them change direction; while some models will auto-change directions every minute, the manual control is nice if you have a particularly sensitive nerve that doesn’t like one direction.

Mirakel’s Massager offers a heating function, which Jessica Crow, licensed massage therapist and founder of CNTRD Wellness, recommends because “the heat will also soften the tight muscles and tissues so that the percussion, kneading or vibration is more effective and safer because you’ll be able to relax more deeply—your muscles won’t be ‘fighting’ against the massage pressure, which in some cases can cause more damage.”

Both Crow and Dr. Moore like the stirrup design for the arms, as it helps to keep the massager right where you want it and it allows you to create more focused pressure with gentle pulling, while also allowing your upper traps to relax. Just go lighter than you think with the pressure to start, Crow advises.

While the concept of a neck massager that requires you to use your arms might sound annoying, it’s actually kind of ideal because it forces you to take a break from activities like typing or scrolling that contribute to neck pain. The stirrup design also allows you to maintain pressure if you want to move the massage nodes down onto your traps, your back or anywhere that’s sore.

We also love the safety protection of the Mirakel Massager: It has overheat protection built in, and the massager automatically shuts off after 15 minutes so you don’t risk over-kneading any tender areas.

The main gripe with this massager is that it isn’t cordless, so you’re tied to a single location for your massage. However, power from a cord often means a stronger battery and more power. And we love that there’s both a wall-plug and car plug for passengers on long road trips. Lastly, we love that this neck massager comes with 30 days of free returns and a one-year manufacturer replacement policy.

  • 8 bi-directional massage nodes
  • Arm stirrups for controlled pressure
  • Heat feature

  • Not cordless
  • Heat could be stronger

Best Cordless Neck Massager

A Powerful Neck Massager You Can Move Around With

Etekcity Cordless Neck Massager

Weight: 3.75 lbs| Battery Life: 3 hours | Heat: Yes

Following the same design as our top overall pick, the Etekcity Cordless Neck Massager offers stirrup straps for your arms to help control the pressure from the eight bi-directional rollers and heat activation for enhanced muscle relaxation.

However, there’s one big design difference: It’s completely cordless, which makes it more convenient to move around during your massage.

The battery will last for 3 hours and is rechargeable with the included charger. Unlike its corded brethren though, the power behind the nodes noticeably fades as the battery starts to die.

The reason this didn’t make our top spot is it’s not as universally ideal: The overall design is a bit cumbersome and blocky and you have to pull down more to get deep knots out, which may be more difficult for people with limited mobility or strength. The nodes also change direction automatically every 30 seconds, which can be uncomfortable depending on what kind of neck pain you’re dealing with. Plus, it’s more expensive and some people report the heating element isn’t strong enough for their needs.

However, some people may actually prefer the automatic direction change, and be willing to trade off node power and weaker heat for cordless convenience.

  • Cordless
  • 8 strong, bi-directional massage nodes
  • Heat

  • Bulky design

Best Portable Neck Massager

A Small But Mighty Handheld Massager You Can Take Anywhere

Enowpo Handheld Percussion Back And Neck Massager

Weight: 5.04 oz | Battery Life: 180 minutes | Heat: No

Whether you travel regularly or you want to be able to toss your neck massager in a hand bag and pack for on-the-go use, the Enowpo Handheld Percussion Massager is lightweight, has a battery that lasts 180 minutes (usually about 1 to 2 weeks) and is barely bigger than a tennis ball.

Despite being small, it packs a serious punch: Its powerful motor runs up to 15,000 vibration frequencies per minute, coming out one of the three legs for strategic pressure. This handheld massager uses percussion which hits deeper in the muscle compared to vibrating options, says Dr. Moore.

We love the ergonomic design that sports a comfortable handhold, and that this massager can be used not just on the neck but also on the back, shoulders, forearms, legs and even your feet.

  • Portable
  • Versatile use
  • Strong vibration
  • Affordable

  • No heat

Best Neck Massager For Athletes

A Lightweight-But-Powerful Massage Gun For Post-Workout Relief

Hypervolt Go 2

Weight: 1.5 lbs | Battery Life: 3 hours | Heat: No

If you have neck pain but you also work out regularly, let your money do double duty by opting for a massage gun that can be used to work out kinks in your neck and speed recovery in other muscles. Percussive massage guns, such as the Theragun, tend to go deeper into the muscle than vibrating tools such as the Hypervolt, which is why the latter is more ideal for relief in the base of the neck where your structures are more delicate, Dr. Moore explains.

The Hypervolt Go 2 is the lightweight, travel-friendly option among the Hypervolt line but it still retains its umph. With a high-torque 40W motor, three speeds of 2,200 to 3,200 ppm and up to 40 pounds of stall force, this convenient massage gun has the ideal amount of power for neck and shoulder relief, while still being strong enough to work on other, meatier muscles of your body. The battery lasts up to 3 hours, and the gun comes with two head attachments to work different muscle fibers.

One note: Don’t use your massage gun on the smaller muscles near the top of the neck, Dr. Moore warns. Stick to the bigger muscles along the base of the neck and into the shoulders, which are meaty enough to handle the power of a massage gun—focus here will help with pain further up the neck.

  • Versatile for all muscle soreness
  • Strong motor
  • Travel-friendly size
  • Solid battery life

  • Might be too powerful for small neck muscles if you’re not careful

Best Manual Neck Massager

A Low-Tech Versatile Massager For Manual Manipulation

Thera Cane Massager

Weight: 0.01 lbs | Battery Life: N/A | Heat: No

The Thera Cane is shaped like a cane with six treatment balls strategically placed to tap into painful knots in your neck or elsewhere on your body. This device is a favorite of chiropractors and physical therapists, including Dr. Moore who recommends the Thera Cane as the manual design allows you to better control the pressure while you’re finding pain relief.

The Thera Cane is also ideal if you have limited mobility or strength, as you don’t have to reach your arms overhead at any point to find relief and you can access the most hard-to-reach places on your back. It’s also made from incredibly lightweight plastic, weighing just 0.01 pounds.

While the Thera Cane doesn’t have any of the fancy features of other massagers, like heat or percussion therapy, its battery-free operation and diverse application means this one device will serve you for years.

  • Controllable pressure
  • Versatile use beyond just the neck
  • Lightweight

  • Requires manual pressure

Best Neck Massager for Driving

A Powerful Pillow-like Massager with a Car Adaptor

Papillon Back Massager Pillow

Weight: 3 lbs | Battery Life: Plug-in | Heat: Yes

A neck massager that can provide relief while you’re driving is ideal for a huge category of people susceptible to upper back, shoulder and neck pain—both professional drivers who sit all day, and anyone who experiences pain during the daily commute.

There are a lot of back massagers that act like a rigid pillow, but the Papillon Back Massager is one of the few with every feature you want: It has three speeds, optional heat settings (which Crow says speeds up the benefits of the massage) and both a car adapter (12V DC) and an AC adapter (110-220V) so you don’t have to worry about the battery running out.

The Papillon is ergonomically designed with four 3D massage nodes that automatically change directions every minute. The outside is made with soft, breathable material so you won’t start sweating with the heat function. Plus, you can shimmy the pillow down and use it as a back massager or, when you’re not driving, a foot massager too.

The biggest complaint is that the massager auto-shuts off after 15 minutes, which can be frustrating. But this is actually ideal for overall neck health as both our experts say its important to make sure you’re not over-kneading the sore area, and if you need longer than 15 minutes of massage, that’s probably a sign you should see an in-person professional.

  • Heat
  • Plug-in battery
  • Auto shuts off after 15 minutes for tendon safety

  • Not cordless
  • No strap to attach to headrest
